Lancers Make History: CBU’s First March Madness Run Inspires Riverside

For the first time in program history, the California Baptist University men’s basketball team stepped onto the biggest stage in college sports—the NCAA Tournament—and in doing so, they didn’t just represent a school, they carried the pride of an entire city.

The Lancers’ historic season came to a close with a hard-fought 68–60 loss to the powerhouse Kansas Jayhawks in the first round. But the final score tells only a small part of the story. What this team accomplished throughout the season—and what they represented to Riverside—goes far beyond one game in March.

From the opening tip of the season, CBU showed they were building something special. With a mix of veteran leadership, emerging talent, and relentless energy, the Lancers stacked wins and captured the attention of the college basketball world. Game after game, they proved they could compete with anyone, earning respect not just within their conference, but nationally.

Their reward? A long-awaited invitation to the Big Dance.

For Riverside, this wasn’t just a milestone—it was a moment. A city long known for its deep high school sports roots and growing collegiate presence finally had its signature basketball breakthrough. As CBU’s name appeared on Selection Sunday, celebrations erupted across the community. Students, alumni, and local fans all shared in the excitement of seeing their team take its place among the nation’s best.

When the Lancers faced Kansas, one of the sport’s most storied programs, they didn’t back down. CBU battled with heart, toughness, and belief, staying within striking distance against a team rich with tradition and tournament experience. Every possession reflected the grit that defined their season. Even in defeat, they earned admiration for their fight and composure on the national stage.

What makes this run even more meaningful is what it signals for the future. CBU is no longer just an up-and-coming program—it has arrived. The exposure from March Madness, combined with the foundation built this season, positions the Lancers to continue rising in the years ahead.

And for Riverside, the impact is undeniable. This moment adds to a growing sports identity in the city, one fueled by passion, talent, and opportunity. Young athletes now have a local example of what’s possible. Fans have a team that has proven it belongs. The 2026 season will be remembered not for how it ended, but for what it started. Because this wasn’t just CBU’s first trip to March Madness—it was the beginning of a new era.

Poly Bear sighted in Atlanta

The Inland Empire is officially on the NBA map again, and it’s thanks to none other than Riverside Poly’s very own Lamont Butler Jr. After an incredible college journey and a legendary March Madness moment etched in history, Lamont is now headed to the league—signing a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks.

Let’s give this man his flowers.

Born and raised in Moreno Valley, Butler was a standout from day one. He made his mark early at Riverside Polytechnic High School, where his poise, leadership, and two-way talent quickly made him one of the top players in the region. Anyone who saw him in a Poly Bears jersey knew he was built different.

From there, Lamont took his talents to San Diego State, where he became a defensive menace and a certified March Madness legend. Who could forget his buzzer-beating shot that sent SDSU to the 2023 national championship game? That moment alone earned him a forever place in tournament lore.

But he wasn’t done yet.

In a move that surprised many, Lamont transferred to Kentucky for his final year of eligibility—and he thrived. Under the bright lights of Rupp Arena, he started 27 games, led the team in assists, shot a career-best 39% from three, and continued to lock up opponents on defense. He even dropped a perfect 10-for-10 performance against Louisville, including six threes, putting up a career-high 33 points. Clutch doesn’t even begin to describe him.

Despite going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks wasted no time signing him to a two-way contract. He now has a real shot to prove himself in Summer League and the G-League, with hopes of cracking the Hawks’ regular-season rotation behind Trae Young.

This moment isn’t just about Lamont—it’s a win for Riverside, for Poly High, and for the entire Inland Empire. It shows that no matter where you come from, with work ethic, character, and faith, your dreams can become reality.

Lamont Butler has always represented with class and confidence. From the CIF grind to the NCAA Tournament, and now the NBA, he’s never forgotten where he came from. He carries Poly pride with him every step of the way, and we couldn’t be more proud to see one of our own take the next step.

To Lamont: congratulations on everything you’ve accomplished so far. You’ve made the IE proud, and we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way as you chase greatness in the NBA. The league just gained a relentless defender, a clutch performer, and a proven leader.

Keep doing your thing, #LamontButler. From the 951 to the ATL—this is just the beginning.
